review 1: Gottman is one the nation's leaders in researching how to help couples have healthy and successful relationships. In my own research, I have relied on Gottman's expertise to help guide me to discover how communication impacts relationships. What are we truly communicating to each other in our most intimate relationships? This book hones in on trust as the foundation for any healthy relationship and betrayal as the poison that will destroy relationships. I think a lot of people may understand what trust is, but they don't understand what betrayal is. Gottman does an excellent job explaining how to identify both trust and betrayal in this book. How to build trust and how to get rid of betrayal is the focus of this book. Well worth reading, if you want to learn how to have a ... morehealthy foundation in your marriage and/or romantic relationship.
review 2: This was another book written discussing the results found from Gottman's research in his "love lab" at University of Washington. He discusses the positive aspects of relationships instead of writing about what couples do wrong. It includes assignments, tests, and statistics that provide hands-on tools to keep a relationship on track. I didn't like it as much as the Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, but it was a good book and I would recommend it to therapists and couples working to keep their relationship strong. less
