review 1: The first chapter of "Silence of Animals" deals with the myth of progress -- the notion that things are always getting better. It is the only chapter worth reading in this rambling discourse. The thesis of the book is that humans think they're better than animals when in fact, they ARE animals and are on par with other creatures on the planet. I read this book in two days, paying more attention to the first chapter and skimming the other two (which are virtually unreadable). This book should have been a long essay on the myth of progress.

... moren Gray's original thoughts--and far less memorable. I found each of Gray's other books immensely intellectually simulating; he has influenced my worldview and my thinking about politics a great deal. I recommend reading one of the other works and giving this one a miss. less

An interesting and intelligent take on subjects that are often butchered by the overly optimistic.

Reread today. Brilliant and brings much needed sanity.
Kate
Thoughtful and sometimes bleak.
