review 1: This story had such a great premise, combining my love of a classic 'whodunnit' with the grittiness of a dark and twisted modern thriller. However the story was, for me, lacking in several places. Firstly, I found the writing to be very simplistic, which could have worked, but I just found each of the characters to be far too stereotypical for this simplistic nature of writing to really take a grip on me. Secondly, I found the idea of a near fatally wounded gun shot victim managing to survive the night of a snowstorm without succumbing to his injuries highly unrealistic, and in fact, the whole background story surrounding the money seemed to have something missing. Finally, I disliked the way the character Nate was portrayed in the book, all of his actions seemed so very s... moretereotypical of an early 20s, ex-criminal, whereas I feel his character deserved a more complex personality than he was given credit for. All in all, it was a very 'meh' read.
review 2: A thought provoking book in which the tension builds up in every chapter until you get to the shocking finale.i cant say i felt any sympathy for any of the characters apart from Marcus and maybe poor Nate who was only trying to do what he thought was right and keep his miserable moaning girlfriend happy.i have also read John Rector's other book Already gone which is also a very good book and well worth reading if you enjoyed this book. less

Decent thriller. Listen to your parents, and don't give rides to strangers.

Derivative plot but very competently done "modern noir" debut novel.
