review 1: Full disclosure, I did not make it all the way through. I made it around 1/3 of the way. The story was decent, but the whole thing dragged on and on. I am not afraid of a four inch thick book, there are some great ones, but sometimes there is just no reason for it to be that thick. I checked it out from the library, and had gone the full month check out time plus a renewal of another month, and I figured as I was approaching the end of that, if I was barely that far into it and not that thrilled to keep going, there wasn't much point in keeping it out longer.
review 2: If the star system allowed, I'd give this book 3.5 stars. Fairly easy read, but way too long at over 900Pages. It does introduce you to a lot of historic events of the late 1890's and particularl
... morey the experiences of African American soldiers in two wars during that time period. In addition, the Historic events that occurred in North Carolina will make you cringe. The unfortunate part is that all these events are a dark stain on our country's past. less

I loved this book. 950+ pages never felt so easy and fluid. A hell of a story in very skilled hands.
