review 1: This trilogy, taken together, is a monumental achievement. It tells a heartbreaking story about a group of gay friends in Sweden, mostly focusing on the mid-80s when AIDS is ravaging their community; however, it's not just about AIDS and death, loss, etc., it's also a chronicle of the gay movement in Sweden, the attitudes of the public, details about governmental regulations, newspaper headlines, expert testimony, statistics, and all of that as well. On top of the heartbreak, there is a deeply felt love story and memorable characters. Add to all of this, some of the most gorgeous writing I've ever read and you get some small sense of the power of these books. You won't be starting with this book, but you must read to the end, even though this particular one has perhaps the... more most focus on death. Imagine the Swedish publishing scene today where 90% of all novels published have to be crime novels in one way or another, and yet somehow, they had the guts to publish these books. They condemn Swedish societal attitudes in the 70s-80s as much as they praise how far the Western world has come in the last 40 years. They compare and contrast AIDS in the USA and Reagan's unforgivable stance of ignoring the epidemic as hundreds of thousands died with Sweden's supposedly more liberal international reputation and how Swedish gays came this close to being interred in concentration camps. It's a rage-filled mirror to the reader to explain the attitudes of the times, lament the passing of so many friends, and shout into the chasm. But at the same time, it is so full of love, life, and utter joy. I don't know how he managed it, but this is a novelist at the top of his game, writing about something deeply felt and lived.
review 2: Döden on Jonas Gardellin trilogian hieno päätös.

Sorgsen men även lycklig.

This story gets you. Although it's not as hitting as the first one.
