review 1: The first 3/4 of this book are exactly what a reader would want; captivating and consistently encouraging you to keep turning the page, despite your need to sleep and/or eat. Unfortunately, as the stack of unread pages gets smaller and smaller, you start to doubt whether or not there's enough left to really finish the story...and then you find out that your doubts are valid. I like the author's style and will likely read a new novel. Maybe the third time will be the charm and we'll get all of the build up AND the big finish.
review 2: If I had to find a hook to hang this on, I'd be hard pressed to avoid Robert Rankin comparisons. The difference being that this is not quite as absurd or playful, and actually at times seems hell-bent (so to speak) toward out-and
... more-out horror, certainly toward the end. In that respect, it definitely teeters on the Lovecraftian edge in parts as other reviews have pointed out, but thankfully has a much lighter touch, to stop it being as ponderous, stomp-footed and dull as Lovecraft usually is. This is certainly no bad read at all, and felt effortless, a characteristic for which I'm always grateful, whatever the genre. less

It was a fun, if sometimes meandering, ride. I will read Mr. Barnes again, if the chance arises.

Fine, for having been picked up in the Harare airport.
