review 1: I found this book after seeing Neil Gaiman enthusiastically recommend Jonathan Carroll, and after seeing it involved time travel, i quickly bought it on Kindle. The title is somewhat misleading - the "ghost in love" part is a very minor part of this book, barely acknowledged, really. It's a story of a man who was supposed to die after a head injury, but who inexplicably lived, and how this is wreaking havoc with the higher-ups of the universe. He soon exhibits new powers, including time travel. Of course when the universal order breaks, there are those in power who try to quash it, and you will see that here. I was excited to see a new take on the life after death sequence, but I was ultimately disappointed in the ending. I found Jonathan Carroll's style to be easy to read... more, however, and I'll be checking out other books by him in the future.
review 2: I was given this book by a fellow teacher. I was intrigued by the title (I love good ghost stories) but this book threw me for a loop. There were several points where I wanted to quit the book and add it to my books-so-bad-that-I-couldn't-finish-reading-it bookshelf but I really like a good dog story and Pilot is a good dog.I still don't buy the premise but it has provided me with much food for thought about life, spirituality (in the true sense of the word: spirit), love, predsestination, and growing up.I don't think I'll ever read the book again. There are times when I thought the book rated a 1 but the feelings I had by the end of the book tell me it's a 5. less

This started out strong but gets flabby in the middle. When people started jumping on refrigerators, MATRIX-style, my eyes glazed over. The end doesn't improve -- with the exception of Chapter Ten, the only real bit of character development on display -- or really provide any answers about anything that's happened. Carroll clearly has a LOT of ideas and I respect that. However, not every idea needs to make it into one novel.

I started out not liking this novel because it felt cold and distant, but as I progressed, I found myself really enjoying it for the philosophical observations on the human condition. Instead of disliking main character, Ben Gould, I found myself identifying with him as he struggles to make sense of his life, his dreams, and the multiple facets of his personality. This is going to be an excellent book club discussion.

Well written Magical Realism. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Great beginning, but tried to reach too far for me.
