review 1: I always look forward to anything by JC. He ranks with my favorite authors of all time; however, 'Bathing the Lion' is definitely my least favorite of his books. There was definitely the Carroll-esque change in plot direction but the lack of character development, including the number of characters who had no development at all (not sure why some were inserted in the first place), left it all somewhat lacking for me.
review 2: A challenging read in the vein of Gaiman/Pratchett's "Good Omens", only a much more satisfying experience. For much of the book, it is obvious that Carroll's prose is beyond well-written. It is textured, nuanced, and wholly realistic. That is, until he turns the entire story in circles. The narrative sometimes becomes disoriented and, s
... moreubsequently, so does the reader. However, the characters are also every bit as confused so everyone is in the same boat. I thoroughly enjoyed the majority of the book and was veritably impressed by the author's imagination. less
