review 1: Enjoyable, and compelling enough to get me invested in the plot, but I'm suspicious of something that seems to pour several archetypes of myth and fantasy and sf and action westerns into the same pot and stir, as if just hoping a cohesive tale will emerge.Alternate history, dystopic societies, the four horsemen of the apocalypse with cybernetic steeds, Native American skinwalkers, magic and political corruption and fate crossed love...... ok. So what does it all mean? Hickman has a lot to live up to with the promises he is making in this initial volume.
review 2: This volume contains 1-5.An alternate reality of the US - The Indian Wars lasted 20 yrs, until a comet hit the US, which ended the Wars and led to the formation of the Seven Nations of America (SNA?)
... morein Nov 1908; in Atlanta, the Prophet Longstreet wrote the second book of Revelation; and Red Cloud, Chief of Chiefs, shared a waking vision with his Elders. Those two men died immediately after, delivering those two parts of The Message. A huge mystery, apparently until Mao Ze Dong wrote the third part of it on his own deathbed. The Message was the story of the End of the World.I think this is THAT story. The art so far goes very well with the writing, no "jerky bits". It's a bit detailed, but entertaining, gives the reader plenty to look at.The writing is developing, but also does the deed, tells the story well. The next several issues should be interesting!Cool world they've built. What a mix!The Four Horsemen (or in this case, 3 of the 4) are very cool and also hilarious! Death hasn't shown up yet.Ah. Wait. Yes he has. Just not in the same guise as the others. Intriguing. The Seven Nations: Premier of Armistice; People's Repulbic of Shanghai; Endless Nation; Black Towers; Kingdom of New Orleans; Republic of Texas and the Union. (as far as I can determine)New, different ideas here. A different approach also. less

I really wanted to like this but I just couldn't. Mostly because of the art. That is all.

Rereading this now - slower than I remember, but very much in world building mode.
