review 1: Utterly wonderful and a fantastic outing for the Howling Commandos. It's great to see them with a chapter of Secret Warriors dedicated to them, and it fits well in a series that is for the most part episodic, focusing on different storylines with greater or lesser intensity. This is a chapter that no Howling Commandos fan can miss, with a nostalgic look back to the Commandos of old, a poignant consideration of how their time has passed and a heroic and heart-breaking last ride.

Hickman crafts an intricate weaving of stories, pathos and political intrigue in this book that tells a sad, almost inevitable tale of the Howling Commandos' coming to face their greatest threat ever from Hydra.Gruff men who take their lumps, face their demons not ... morebecause they're smarter but because they were raised and hardened to accept it and fight until they're dead, because that's what good men do. It's a bit mythical and hard to relate to, but it's also supremely aspirational and very well-written - not once did I doubt these men were the real deal.Hickman has fleshed out some killer storylines with the Secret Warriors - I've said it before, that his work surprises and delights me, and compared to my expectation that he was riding on Bendis' coattails, it's clear now that this is exactly the kind of work Hickman was ready to take on alone.The art in this series continues to be gritty, easy to follow the big action, and does great justice to the writing (making it grand and evocative). less
