review 1: How do you approach a theme like WWII –that has been beaten to death– and still make it surprising and interesting? For Jonathan Hickman it’s to forget everything you knew about it and just have fun with it – lot of fun. At times, we are basically left to ask ourselves, “What the hell is going on here?”In Manhattan Projects a team of scientists have been brought together to deal with the ongoing second world war. A very large and colorful team. It also asks the question, “Are there any real good guys in a war?” There are a lot of players in the Manhattan Projects, and the key to making this story work is Hickman’s approach to encompass these characters in people we already know (or thought we knew). There’s Dr. Oppenheimer who is a psychotic cannibal w... moreith multiple personalities, Dr. Einstein and Dr. Feynman who are quantum physicists trying to bring the technology of wormholes to the war, FDR who now diseased is providing experience as artificial intelligence, Wernher von Braun who is a robot-armed rocket scientist and Nazi traitor now working for the Americans, and many more. Manhattan Projects is definitely full of colorful characters and one thing is for sure, they are all evil in their own way. And as they uncover some technological developments that most definitely will give them the upper hand in the war, it seems like there is even an extraterrestrial interest in this technology. How is our team to deal with it? Well, by basically elevating themselves to the bigger monsters.Say what you will, but Manhattan Projects is definitely as entertaining as it is horrific. Helping all that is Nick Pitarra’s excellent art which looks like a cruder, ruder version of Frank Quitely’s style, it provides the guts needed to tell this story. Especially with all the guts splattered throughout the pages. It’s shocking reading though this book to think that something like this even exists. Or maybe it’s just that exciting? 3.5 stars.
review 2: I've gotten really tired of secret histories of WW2 and the new trend towards super-wrinkly art that I think Frank Quitely started, but I feel like there's something here that Hickman could have dug out of its current setting and made into something good. It's good, but ultimately I just feel frustrated hat someone didn't hear the pitch for this and winnow it down to the stuff that's actually interesting. less

Not a fan. A lot of random occurrences and not a real tight storyline. Also, a little gross.

Awesome. Worm-holing super geniuses and an artificial intelligence FDR. Awesome.
