review 1: Wow. Wow, wow, wow, wow. An incredible concept (what if the Manhattan Project as we know it was just one of a series of dastardly scientific weapons programs run by the top minds in the world) that is told with reckless, joyful abandon. This book has it all: a fucked-up (but genius) serial killer version of Robert Oppenheimer, badass Einstein, psychic death Buddhists, a ruthless robot-armed Wernher Von Braun, and the digitized, disembodied, artificial intelligence-assisted brain of FDR warning us that, "all we have to fear ... Is ourselves." An absolutely brilliant work on the haunting legacies of our scientific achievements.
review 2: The secret history of the Manhattan Project, where the atomic bomb is just a public cover for more exotic and dangerous pieces ... moreof science. Along with a cadre of mad scientists (and their evil doppelgangers), there are aliens, Death Buddhists and a computer powered by the consciousness of dead FDR. The art style is deceptively haphazard; the faces of the scientists and other historical figures are caricaturish but recognizable and detailed. The use of color as symbol is obviously incredibly well thought out. I always enjoy alternate history as a genre and the incorporation of so much sci-fi and supernatural craziness makes the plot of this graphic novel especially fun. I can't wait to pick up the next few trades. less
