review 1: Picture Arthur Dent (Hitchhiker's Guide...) in Torchwood, and you have Arthur Wallace, protagonist of No Hero. Having been a police detective in no way prepared Arthur for the supernatural, multidimensional monsters that he is tasked to defeat in his role as the newest member of M137. The learning curve is so steep that he is barely able to accept his new reality, much less keep up with the other team members. On one hand, he responds the way any human would respond. The problem is that there is a lot of bumbling along the way and we never really get a hero as Arthur is continually overwhelmed. The real action hero is Kayla, and I think it might have been more interesting to see the story from her point of view. There is definitely humor in Arthur's situation, but it ... moreis more slapstick than dark, and I found myself getting a little impatient with him. What saved the book for me is that it is a good story and concept, and there are moments of darkness (especially at the end) that balance out the silliness. I also liked that while Arther tried to tap into the hero qualities of Kurt Russell, he does come to realize that his role on the team is far less glamorous and more managerial. However, I really needed something heroic from him and kept hoping for something nontraditionally heroic, but it never came. Arthur would have to develop something beyond his current skill set to keep me interested in the series. Maybe I should have paid more attention to the title.
review 2: An enjoyable urban fantasy set in Oxford, England. when detective Arthur Wallace catches a killer in the act the last thing he expects is to find himself suddenly dragged into an interdimensional war with tenticled monsters from space. Wallace is far from an action hero and only has the movies of his favourite actor Kirt Russell as guide. Not the best guide really... I don't think this is the best urban fantasy I've read and Wallace probably isn't totally convicincing as a top notch detective. However, having said that I would still read a sequel if one was written and I'm glad to have found the short story in the same universe the author has on his website. less

A rather snarky action adventure with the catch phrase, "What would Kurt Russell do?"

This was a fun, light read that's sort of a cross between Hellboy and Men in Black.

Breezy, amusing Lovecraftian tale.
