review 1: A lovely little book of stories and art. I particularly loved "Shadow Caste" and "The Man in the Herringbone Hat". There was only one story I didn't like which led me to give four instead of five stars: "The Zeppelin Zoo". I can't abide stories where all the words are made up gibberish meant to impart deeper meaning. But that's just me. I'm sure it appeals to some people and for them this book is perfect. For me, it's near perfect.
review 2: This is a gem of creativity, so inspiring to read, watch and listen to. I can tell already that I'm going to be coming back to this often to raise my spirits. It's the edited product of an ongoing internet collaboration called hitRECord, where people upload sounds, pictures, stories, movies and edit and remix each other's w
... moreork. The project is headed by the actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt and you can see his influence all over this multimedia set. It has three main parts: there's a book, and tucked into the front flap there is a DVD and tucked into the back flap you'll find a CD. They all relate to each other in a playful way - for example in the movie Optimistic you'll hear an aside about a meeting on a train with a Man in a Herringbone Hat and in the book you can read a story about him. The background music to the Morgan M Morgansen movies has its own track on the CD, which is structured as a radio show. Poems and tiny stories abound, so do drawings and songs and playful little movies and copious glimpses into the collaborative process. There is just so much here to explore and enjoy. I love listening to the CD while I drive, especially the song "I Have No Cats" which always makes me laugh and "Everything Is On Fire All The Time" which is hauntingly beautiful. I usually listen to the CD all the way through because I love the way it is strung together with music, explanations and stories. The DVD needs to be seen all the way through at least once to get the full effect but it does have a good menu structure so you can go straight to whatever bit you feel like rewatching. The daffy steampunk of the Morgan M Morgansen movies is a delight, and I find so much inspiration in the movies And A New Earth, How To Get Inspired (very well named that one :-) and especially Optimistic, which really captures how much love I have for the internet and its power to connect people with each other. All in all, this is a playful, joyous and life-affirming work and I can't recommend it highly enough. less
