review 1: The main character is not always likable or sympathetic. I didn't really like that he was so dispassionate about people and his relationships to him. I think the author was trying to say that his passion for baseball got in the way of that, but that's never really clear, and the ending doesn't really resolve his issues. Still, it's very good story telling, and you learn a lot about the backside of baseball.
review 2: I enjoyed this book, But the main character Edward Everett was so clueless I got frustrated at a couple of points during the narrative. There was total disconnect between his insights about baseball and baseball players as opposed to the lack of awareness about his own life and the people within it. ... morep in time from EE's late 20s all the way to age 60, which EE references with occasional vague memories. He is a lonely man but can't take the steps which would lead to real companionship. I suspect the author is representing many people in the world...we've all met at least one Edward Everett along the way. less
