review 1: Well, I have never been a zombie fan and zombie books do not attract me much. I tried a few 2 or so but this was on my kindle and after reading Maddadam I was still interested in reading something apocalyptic. Apparently this book was the first of this author and self published. Well it was noticeable.Very bad writing in places. This author is not good at all in writing about feelings that is for sure.Also apparently a gun fan. There was way too much info about guns imo.His 6 months old baby never cried. Oops it did twice. Well sorry but that is so unrealistic and stupid. Plus the main character was quite annoying.But I managed to try not to think about those annoyances and then the story was quote interesting and a quick read.Right now I am reading book 2 but it is now g... moreetting boring. All those zombie killings start to look like one. I think you should not read all those books at once. So I will finish book 2 and than read something different.
review 2: Normally, I would have given up on a book with such a Mary Sue protagonist, but a couple of things made me smile, so I stuck it out. Thumbs up for not waiting to be rescued by the gov't or military and for making political-types be bad guys. I also quite liked the bones of the story. But our hero is just too damn perfect. He almost never missed a shot and seemed to be practically psychic when it came to stockpiling food, water & ammo (always just in time) or getting out of Dodge (ditto). Every idea was good and only villains disagreed with him. Great big yawn. He made one mistake near the end, but didn't stagger under the weight of the guilt. I probably won't read any more in the series. less
