review 2: I enjoyed "Beat the Reaper" quite a bit, so when a friend gave me "Wild Thing" for my birthday, I was of course stoked to read it. (Besides the fact that I got a book as a gift, which is my favorite gift next to actual magic, this one was given to me by a good friend whose literary opinions mean quite a lot, and whom you probably know too - or at least have heard of and wish you knew better.)I give this book 3 stars for a couple of simple reasons. First, I need to do a better job of reserving my 5-star rating for those books I would happily read again; this story was entertaining, and as much I enjoy Pietro Brwna / Peter Brown / Lionel Azimuth as a protagonist (and Bazell has done a nice job of setting up at least one more adventure with this character), I don't think I'll actually re-read this any time soon. Then, I just... I don't know. I didn't give a single shit about the female lead. She's a caricature of the previous female lead, and it's sort of a smudged caricature at that. I don't believe her, I don't care about her, she's trying way too hard to be independent and self-righteous and misses her mark in all the wrong places. Though the story itself is engaging and the style is interesting, there's a lot of loose ends that never get tied up - what happens with the trial? What happens with Christine? Why did SPOILER SPOILER have to die? (That one just seems gratuitous, even though PRONOUN was kind of a loser anyway.) I have more thoughts on this, but I've already said more than I normally would for a 3-star novel, and haven't really said anything. VERDICT: Bazell is a charming storyteller and I enjoyed this one somewhere between a 7 and an 8. It has earned its place on the shelf next to Beat the Reaper. less

I love the way Bazell writes. One of the freshest voices I've read in years.
