review 1: I don't drink beer, but I have family that does and two of them have been labeled Beer Snobs. But even if you don't like to drink it, this is still a very interesting book. I was even able to come away and tell them things about craft brewing they didn't know! And it's just amazing all the different types that are made, how they are made, the incredible variety of ingredients (the number of hop varieties!) And if you ARE a beer geek, you'll probably still learn things you dind't know and be inspired to break out a little.
review 2: This is a truly fun read! Brewed Awakening is a primer for lovers of craft brewing. The book hits first the basics (beer ingredients), and covers topics such as seasonal and organic beers before finally wrapping up with a chapt
... moreer on cellaring beer and beer-pairing dinners. My fiance is a home brewer, and I spent every night for a week bugging him with "Have you ever had a gueuze?" or "Did you know beers with high ABVs cellar the best?" I also really enjoyed the stories of how small breweries began farming their own hops or decided to brew a glucose-free line of beers. Interspersed throughout the book are beer lists of "three to try" or "twelve to try" for different categories of beers (sour beers, pre-prohibition style lagers, etc.) I've decided this is going to be my "life list" for beer. The recommended beverages span beer you can pick up in your local Kroger (Redbridge, 8-ball Stout) to imperial stouts you would have to stand in line for the night before the release date in the Munster, IN (Dark Lord Russian-style Imperial Stout). Anytime I head to New York or Quebec or Maine for a conference or vacation, I'll know which breweries to head to!So in short, this is a fun book to read and will be a great reference in the future. I received an ARC of Brewed Awakening through the Goodreads Firstreads program. My thoughts are my own. less
