review 1: Joyce Carol Oates is her best when she’s creepy, in my opinion. The writing here, often somewhat experimental, is striking and all of these stories, especially “The Corn Maiden,” the longest of the bunch about a young girl who kidnaps a girl from her class in order to re-enact the ritual of the The Corn Maiden sacrifice from Native American legend, will leave you with an unsettled feeling in your stomach and disturbing scenes imprinted on your brain. Other faves of mine were “Beersheba,” and “Nobody Knows My Name.” I still think about this collection a year after first reading the book, if that’s any indication.
review 2: My year of Oates continues with this 2011 collection of psychologically chilling tales, including one novella and six short s
... moretories. While only the opening title story is overtly horrifying, all of them are unsettling, and there is not a single dud in the batch. The weakest link if I had to pick would be "Nobody Knows My Name," for the simple fact of its obviousness; still, though, it is elevated by the strength of Oates's writing. "Fossil Figures" is downright startling in its mix of pathos and poignancy, and "Helping Hands" is proof that Oates's ability to render realistic, fleshed out characters in the span of a short story is as strong as ever. less

From this anthology, I found the first story, The Corn Maiden, to be the best.

Surprisingly good collection of stories. Think Tales of the Unexpected.
