review 1: Hardships in families in the 1800's were just as hard as some people have it today. The mother of Mattie had two children and no father to help her with them. However the mother did find someone to fall in love with and get married. The new father wanted to move to Nebraska but Mattie had found a job taking care of a doctor's little girl. Mattie at this time was 14 years old. Mattie stayed with the doctor to finish school and he sent her to medical school and she became the first woman doctor in Nebraska. The story is great with a good plot and a lot of detail that is very interesting. Mattie lived to be 80 years old. I did not write the whole plot because you would miss out on all the lovely history. A must read.. it's fast reading and the author is very ... moregood.
review 2: Though I loved the storyline (because I could easily have been a frontier doctor and Mattie's life has some similarity to mine), I thought that the author left too many wide gaps. I would have preferred a much longer book, if necessary to have more continuity of the story. Our author started a thought, then quickly abandoned it. The story jumped around too much for my taste. I would have recommended it highly were it not for the fact that it isn't complete. I love stories of strong women, because I'm one, myself. But this one left me lacking. I kept waiting for more.... less

Interesting account of a female doctor in Nebraska. The ending was a little abrupt, though.

I loved how Mattie always overcame and was so strong. Teenager liked this read also.
