review 1: Posted on Les Romantiques - Le forum du siteReviewed by RinouReview Copy from the PublisherThe secrets of sir Richard Kenworthy is the fourth volume in the Smythe-Smith series, featuring musician cousins from the family of the same name, and supposed to be the last as the author announced a quartet. We see again Iris, one of the Smythe-Smith cousins, during the famous annual musicale, trying desperately to disappear behind her cello while waiting for the ordeal to end. We meet for this occasion Sir Richard, who, for an unknown reason, needs a wife very quickly, sets his mind on Iris, and goes so far as to compromise her in front of her family in order to precipitate the wedding.I really liked Iris, I found her touching, witty, and her little cynical and teasing side made m... moree smile. I also liked her resolution to try and resist to her burgeoning feelings for her new husband because of this secret he’s hiding and that she can feel, then how she face up when the secret is finally revealed (which I can’t tell anything without spoiling completely the plot). My feelings for Sir Richard are more mitigated. I understood the how and the why of his behavior but I didn’t accept his manipulation for all that. However I liked that he’s feeling guilty, and that he tries to make sure Iris appreciates him enough not to turn her back on him when he’ll have revealed his secret, and of it’s not so, that he’ll have stored up a lot of good memories. I also really liked his final reaction of which I can’t talk more either (and now you will be frustrated not to know lol).I found that their couple was really cute, and the seduction scenes are quite nicely written. However I was frustrated not to know earlier this secret we readers discover at the same time as Iris when Richard thinks about it regularly, and so I was almost in the same state as her when the revelation is done (well done Julia Quinn). At the beginning we meet again the Smythe-Smith family so nicely energetic and harebrained, and near the end Richard’s two sisters. But there is a long part of the story where we see very few secondary characters apart from some servants here and there, during this period when Richard tries to be in his wife’s good graces, and where the story focuses on the evolution of the couple and their feelings. Perhaps that’s why I found there was in this novel less humor than what the author got us used to. However the discussion on marital duties between Iris and her mother is quite fabulous. To conclude, I found that The secrets of sir Richard Kenworthy was a novel a little different from the author’s habitual style with a little more emotions and little less humor, and I’m sure the fans will find it end the series nicely.
review 2: A charming, witty, utterly delightful read, The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy was a lovely romance that I really enjoyed. It was fun, romantic, and a really wonderful book.Iris was a great heroine. Sensible, kind, and forgiving, she wasn't the type of heroine to be lost in melodrama. She was more the type to stay calm and deal with the situation, which made her a wonderful character in my book. I really liked her.Richard was good as well. He was sweet and determined to take care of his sisters as best he could. He occasionally got some ridiculous ideas into his head that made situations more complicated than they needed to be, but overall he was an adorable character. The romance was lovely. Despite their shaky circumstances, it was clear that they had real feelings for each other right from the start and those feelings continued to grow. I thought they were a wonderful couple. My only issue with the book was what the big secret turned out to be. When it was revealed, it seemed like all the drama that came with it was blown way out of proportion. It should have been something calmly discussed, but apparently, that's not how it worked with the Kenworthys. I was appeased by the fact that Iris saw it the same way. Once she found out, her thoughts were basically "are you kidding me? The answer is staring you right in the face." So, that kept me from really getting annoyed. The plot kept me engaged all the way through. The humor in this book was a delight and I found myself smiling as I was reading more than once. I really liked the story and the ending was perfect. The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy was a delightful historical romance and I really enjoyed reading it. Romance lovers, this is a book worth checking out.*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review less

Why all the 5 stars on a book not out yet? Something is rotten in the state of Goodreads!

A bit frustrating not knowing what this big, bad secret was, but the book was done well.
