Rev. Clare Fergusson & Russ Van Alstyne Mysteries
review 1: I have read all of The books by Spencer-Fleming prior to this one. I feel like I have invested myself in the lives of these characters. Clare Ferguson is the only female priest I know (she feels real to me) and I love her strength and determination. She is also terribly flawed--not normally a way I see clergy. After a stint as a helicopter pilot overseas, she comes home to battle her inner demons and help other vets who are doing the same. Of course there are a couple of dead bodies, and she butts into the investigation against the wishes of her fiancé, the local police chief. I want to give this book four stars, but there were several places where it felt like it was dragging. It wasn't as quick a read as earlier books in this series. But it does not disapp... moreoint!
review 2: So after finishing the roller coaster ride that is the seventh book in this series, I have come to the conclusion that Julia Spencer-Fleming is truly an excellent writer. She picks up the story of Episcopalian priest Clare Fergusson and small-town police chief Russ Van Alstyne as Clare arrives home after an 18-month tour of duty with the National Guard as a helicopter pilot in Iraq. And because nothing is ever easy for Clare, returning to her personal and professional life proves difficult. I wish that Spencer-Fleming would have taken more time to better explain why Clare came home so damaged--she has been such an incredibly strong person in the first six books that her addictions did not ring true for me. As always, the plotting of the murder mystery was taut and suspenseful. But what kept me reading at such a rapid pace was seeing Clare and Russ find their way back to each other--I have been rooting for them for 6 books through thousands of pages! And that cliffhanger on the last page nearly put me right over the edge! The next book comes out in a few weeks, but I'm wishing that I could get my hands on an ARC much sooner! less

it was a tough book to get into, but got involved and had an upbeat ending.

My least favorite of the series so far, but read one, read them all.
