review 1: Quick, entertaining read that earned it's rating with a creative (well-executed) concept and sharp, witty performance of the English language. There was no real plot, no memorable characters, and an abrupt ending brought on by timeline rather than story, but if the author had tried to dive deeper or stretch it longer, I would have likely become bored or weary of the style. overall, a worthy diversion for those who appreciate the craft of writing.
review 2: As a one-time college professor, I was extremely amused by this satiric screed on the academic life. Schumacher, a novelist and University of Minnesota faculty member, zings professors, administrators, students, off-campus employers, grant givers, prize presenters and just about everyone else involved in camp
... moreus doings via a series of fictional reference letters written by irascible Jason Fitger, a minimally successful novelist who supports himself by teaching creative writing at Payne University. Fitger feels oppressed by constant requests from students and colleagues to write reference letters, so he strikes back by loading his with backhanded praise and vitriolic asides. Most of the letters are very funny, but a few segue into poignant views of his tumultuous private existence as ex-husband, dumped lover, concerned friend and literary mentor. At 180 pages, "Dear" is a quick, enjoyable read. less
