review 1: I laughed a lot for perhaps the first 50 pages, then the joke/conceit got old. I applaud Jay's intentions, and I am just as angry as he is that the lauded Economics Department gets remodeled and expanded quarters while the unloved, unappreciated English Department gets smoke, dust, and severe budget cuts. If you enjoy sarcasm, and you don't mind repetition, this book is worth a look. The author does get kudos for dreaming up the very original idea of a novel written entirely in LORs (letters of recommendation) most of which are recommending students who are woefully unsuited for the places they are applying to. Another unfortunate reality of life, I guess...
review 2: This collection of letters of recommendation written by an English professor is deceivingly we
... morell crafted to tell a story and even show character development. It's light and funny, especially if you've been around faculty members, but there are darker undertones about career frustration and priorities in higher education today. Although I started out disliking the author of the letters, by the end I was on his side. less

Once you got the premisis, it stopped being funny and became tedious.

Fine, but not as funny as the other reviews would have you think.

Hilarious. I loved it.
