Fairwick Chronicles
review 1: *fans face* Try to ignore the misleading romance novel title and cheesy YA-esque cover. Juliet Dark (also known as Carol Goodman) writes in a satisfying gothic style about all things otherworldly. Callie, the new Assistant Professor of Folklore at the mysterious Fairwick College in upstate New York, finds herself in the thick of all sorts of supernatural drama, particularly involving her own personal uncontrollably seductive incubus. Slow to build, but irresistibly packed to the brim with literary references and alluring descriptions of the many fae, witches, succubi, incubi, and vampires in residence at Fairwick and the surrounding town.
review 2: It’s not difficult to see that the emerging fashion in book-writing these days is to create a concept that can b
... moree dragged out over multiple volumes. Of course, this is entirely logical from a business point of view - once you’ve got a captive audience who wants to know more about your character, world or concept, extra books inevitably mean extra money - but sometimes it can be a bit of a gamble.Thankfully, with Incubus/The Demon Lover (the first book in the Fairwick Chronicles series), Carol Goodman has… well, come good.Aside from a protagonist whose first name I fail to pronounce correctly even with said character’s guidance, and a surname which practically screams “supernatural being here!”, I can find very little fault with this novel. In fact, for the first time in a long time, I actually found myself making time to read; when I got up, when I was eating lunch, when I was riding in the car, in the bath, before I slept… even my dreams were filled with adventures that I might have had if I was resident in the sleepy little town. It was - and this will sound so dreadfully cheesy that I’m loathe to say it at all - as though the phantom of the book’s title had enthralled me as it had Callie, and it wasn’t going to let me go until I’d finished every single page.Goodman understands that a really enjoyable book; one that might, even, climb to great heights in the next few years; needs a strong plot with development at a natural pace, not an electrocardiogram pattern of peaks and troughs. She recognises that too much detail can be just as problematic as not enough, so she opts for subtlety; the erotic scenes are more so because she doesn’t lay it all out on a plate for you. And most of all, she knows how to make characters who are likeable and for whom you really feel - sometimes too much!It doesn’t take a genius to realise that the big event in the middle of the book is not the end of the story - after all, you’ve still got half a book to go - but it would be a logical place to stop to preserve some of the narrative tension. It doesn’t necessarily make the story any less readable; in fact, I was keen to read on to find out just what Goodman had up her sleeve, and what she provided was not a disappointment. The ending is, in equal parts, shocking and beautiful; if you don’t shed at least one tear, I’ll be very surprised. less

Excellent book. I walked into the library to pick up copy of Bookpage when the 3rd volume of this Fairwick Chronicles caught my eye on the new fiction shelft. I had already packed 4 or 5 books to read on coming vacation, but just couldn't resist. Went to card catalogue, looked up author and found 1st 2 volumes of series. Took them off the shelf and checked them out. Read the both of them in 2 wks. Loved them. (Thank goodness for technology...I could renew by computer.) I felt it took a few pages to set the stage, but with each page I was pulled deeper and deeper into the woods, that became an integral character, in the world of Dr. McFay, author of books on the sex lives of demon lovers and surrounded Honeysuckle House....her soon to be new home. Who could resist, sex lives of demon lovers...who knew. I sped through the incredible pages of a fantasy, yet believable setting of a university town that includes faeries, witches and all other type of fantasy character as they work to reside compatibly and save the area from being shuttered by a strong coven of witches, led by Dr. McFay's grandmother. Oh, this leads into the setting of the 2nd volume of the Fairwick Chronicles "Water Witch", a continuation of the fascinating world of Dr. McFay and how she continues to learn about herself, her powers and what her parents really were.A great lead into Nora Robert's The Dark Witch, which I will finish shortly.

Demon Lover sounds like quite the salacious book, however it's not exactly that. Callie McFay is a professor of Gothic literature who takes a position at a small college in New York. While there, she discovers the world of the fey, and also that she is part witch and part fairy. Of course life can't be that simple, something is draining the students and staff of their energy, and Callie becomes involved another professor. I enjoyed this novel immensely. If you like Deborah Harkness, this book might be for you.
