review 1: I'm not quite sure why I'm drawn to the grumpy, slightly misogynistic Danish detective Carl Mork series. Maybe it's that they're bleak, dark, disturbing, rough, and graphic--all things that, when done well, I enjoy. Maybe it's the plot twists or the descriptions of Denmark, maybe it's the intriguing idea of revisiting old cases from the past, maybe it's the utter cruel depravity of the crimes Mork investigates and what they reveal about the darker side of human nature. Whatever the case, this is the second book in the series that I've read, and I'm sure I'll read more. These mysteries are definitely not for the faint of heart (or stomach), and they're awfully bleak, with a far less sympathetic and likeable main detective than say, Harry Hole or Dave Robicheaux, but if you'... morere interested in Scandinavian crime, give Adler-Olsen a shot. Start with the first in the series, The Keeper of Lost Causes which , to this day remains etched in my mind as one of the most twisted description of torture I've read about in a fictional series.
review 2: The second book in the series was not as good as the first. The plot was not very exciting, and the motive was not believable. I enjoyed the character development between Carl and Assad, but I hope the next in the series is better. Requires a huge suspension of disbelief for which the author really establishes no basis. And if you don't suspend your (natural) disbelief, this book is utterly ridiculous. That said, I was still reasonably entertained, in between my eye-rolling. less

Excellent crime story with interesting and likeable protagonists. Enjoyed it a fair bit.

Gratuitous violence and cheap populism from a lesser talented Stieg Larsson.
