review 1: I'm not sure why every Scandinavian mystery/crime author needs to be compared to Stieg Larsson. Well, I understand, but I think it does the other authors a disservice. I loved the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series... but most other authors do not write like he did and they can produce perfectly fine and lovely and enjoyable books on their own terms, in their own voice. To set up a book as "just like XYZ!" only sets up readers for disappointment if they're expecting something so different from what they get. Anyway, mini rant aside, I enjoyed the book. For the first third or so the protagonist was pretty annoying, and I found myself wondering why anyone would want to write a whole series starring this sad sack. But he grew on me, and by the time the book ended I found myse... morelf looking forward to finding another one of his books. The cold case he's trying to solve is horrific. I thought it would be horrifying to read about, but I got through it. The horrific aspects aren't really the focal points of those scenes, and the restraint was appreciated. At heart it was a readable, interesting mystery, during the reading of which I don't think I once rolled my eyes - which is saying a lot for a mystery. The resolution MIGHT have strained my credulity just a little... but getting there was perfectly enjoyable.
review 2: #1 in the caustic Danish police detective Carl Morck Department Q mystery series. He was one of Copenhagen's best homicide detectives but now has psychological issues resulting from a murder scene attack. He returns to work, is put in charge of the new Department Q where cold cases have been assigned to and basically a place to keep him out of sight. The case he starts working on is that of an up and coming woman parliament figure who disappeared 5 years ago. The story of him unraveling the mystery is both engrossing and compelling making for exciting reading.Carl is assigned a Syrian refugee helper who nearly steals the story. The cast of supporting characters also help make the novel interesting and humorous. less

Good story. Well-crafted mystery. And I didn't even know they had homicide in Denmark...
