review 1: This was...a disappointing read. While I love a good unreliable narrator, her militant lack of truth, or clarity mars the book. For me, there is a fine line between pulling truth from the lies, and wtf am I reading. It felt perhaps over edited, and overwrought. The plot line is interesting, if you can follow it, but does little to deliver. There are weird massive leaps between moments, which is understandable in the lie filled diary format, but when you're grasping for what is real and what isn't, you pick up on the little details that feel forced or unreasonable. The major disappointment for me is that there is no conclusion. There is an awkward whirlwind in the end, and then come allusions to Micah's past, and then not much else. I gave it 3 stars because I enjoyed the j... moreourney, but was disappointed by the lack of destination.
review 2: This book has an intriguing twist because you feel like you can trust the narrator while also knowing that you can't. Some of the fantasy elements were a bit too odd for me, and by the middle I was frustrated by the amount of lies Micah told, and the fact that nothing in te story could be believed...a theory definitely shown in the novel's final pages. While I normally enjoy this kind of ending (think of the movie "inception"), I was just frustrated and disappointed. It was not a mind-blowing ending for me. The attempt was there but by the end I just felt like I had wasted my time reading this whole twisted story. Maybe I just don't like Micah. less
