review 1: I liked the complementary pair of a young girl with PTSD who has panic attacks every time she tries to leave her cabin, and a big, gentle stray dog with equally crippling claustrophobia. Good detail about the mechanics of day-to-day survival in a rural winter cabin in the woods, as well as sweet scenes of the girl earning the dog's trust. The dog sounds much prettier than the cover, too, being longhaired with a ruff and a "feathery tail."3.5 stars - not sure I'd read it again, but would certainly bang down doors of elementary schools shouting "GIVE THIS TO ALL YOUR YOUNGSTERS."
review 2: The book The Leanin' Dog by K.A. Nuzum is about a young girl that lives out in a cabin with her dad. Dessa Dean is the young girl and with her dad and her alone, she faces time
... more to studying by herself. She is homeschooled because she lives out where not many interesting things are. Dessa Dean's mom died in a horrific snow storm a couple months before Christmas. If a reader likes a book with adventure, then this might be the book for them. In my opinion, there were times that I was getting bored throughout the book. Some parts were slow moving when no drama or excitement were going on. Later in the book is when the better parts starting to come in. Also, the authors style of writing was easy to picture in the readers mind. I could picture every scene that I read, and for me, that makes a book easier to read. The book was in the time period of about the 1960's because it had an older kind of feel to it. I thought it were from the 1900's because the story did not have a lot of the newer objects such as a TV or a cell phone that was used by any of the characters. Then, there was a dog that Dessa Dean found. That was her only source of fun excitement. I thought the dog and how it was brought up in the story was good. It was good because it showed how Dessa Dean still had fun with her dad getting supplies for the cabin when Dessa Dean was all alone all day. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes an adventure feel or likes the love of animals that is brought up in the story. less
