review 1: I'm giving this book two stars because the two star rating stands for "it was okay." And that's pretty much how I felt about this book. It was okay. I don't think I'll read a sequel but I don't necessarily regret reading this book, either. I guess I just had higher expectations for it. The climax wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be, and there were so many questions left unanswered. (They hinted at being answered in a sequel, but, like I said, I don't think I will stick around to read it.)The book took forever to get going. Wait, no, I take that back-- it never did get going, until the very end. Nothing happened. It was slow paced and kept dragging along. I kept picking up the book, reading a few pages, setting it down, walking away, and repeating that process for r... moreoughly the 2 weeks it took me to finally trudge through this book. The characters were interesting enough to keep me from abandoning the book completely. The main character isn't at all how I expected him, but I wasn't exactly disappointed, either. I do wish there was more of a back story to him, and more interaction with his brother, Cole, considering Cole was the reason our hero became our hero.I would maaaaaybe check out more books from this author, but if this book is a series, I will likely not read any more.
review 2: GoodReads Synopsis: When it comes to demons, always read the fine print. Jesse James Dawson was an ordinary guy (well, an ordinary guy with a black belt in karate) until one day he learned his brother had made a bargain with a demon, Jesse discovered there was only one way to save his brother: put up his own soul as collateral, and fight the demon to the death. Jesse lived to free his brother-and became part of a loose organization of Champions who put their own souls on the line to help those who get in over their heads with demons. But now experienced Champions are losing battles at a much higher rate than usual. Someone has changed the game. And if Jesse can't figure out the new rules, his next battle may be his lastMy Thoughts: This one had a real promising synopsis…I’m just not sure on how well it delivered.I’m finding I love the genre “Urban Fantasy” and this is the debut of a new series. In Jesse James Dawson’s world, people make deals with the Devil, or in this case, his demons. Jesse is part of a small group that when contacted by a “dealmaker”, will take on the contract and battle to dissolve it.The story was good, it’s just that the author’s writing style is not one that I tend to enjoy. I don’t care for long descriptive paragraphs and found myself skimming through them. But the other elements of the story made for the “wordiness” in a way that kept my interest long enough to finish the book.I’m hoping the next installment is tightened up a bit and has a little faster pace. Regardless, I will reserve my full “judgement” until I get to see where the next book goes. less
