review 1: This was a very realistic read to me. It felt like an autobiography of a mentally ill girl. I would diagnose the main character as bipolar and schizophrenic. It felt like it was very literary as well as paranormal. The things she witness and experience could easily be hallucinations, and I sympathize with her. I like books that are not cliche and brave, like this one. Kaaron Warren became one of my favourite authors after reading this book. People who didnt like this just wants easy main stream commercial reads. But this woman is a guru of her work. A rarity. Its like comparing Lady Gaga to Selena Gomez??
review 2: I actually really enjoyed the voice here. The story itself unfolded nicely, not too much foreshadowing, layer by layer. Though I really liked Stevi
... moree, Aunt Jess was the character I found most engaging, especially her little marginalia. Horror, society, deeply Australian in tone and character (actually found myself chuckling at certain turns of phrase and wondering how they'd translate to an international audience). Although I found myself identifying with Steve, sometimes I found some inconsistency in her voice and that would be the only detractor from the tale. I found myself wishing to know more, to see the Jess POV because that was so rich in contrast with some gorgeous writing by itself. Really somewhere between four and five in rating. Definitely read. less
