review 1: I love the concept of this book, though I found the story somewhat dark and depressing. The story takes place in the future on an island called Botanica where a tree grows that is so huge it takes 5 years to walk around. There are many different villages or Orders around the tree. Women from these orders are chosen to be teachers and escort the school age children to each order around the tree. Each order has different customs and beliefs, but in all the tree is a central object, feared in some places loved in others. As the women and children stop they learn the different stories and share theirs as well. Many believe that there are ghosts in the tree that will steal their bones and this becomes part of how the tree is treated. Not all the orders are friendly and s... moreome are so different that it is interesting to see the characters wrestle with fitting in with their hosts while trying to be objective. The journey ends for the children back at their home order, but the women can choose a mate and order along the walk and stay there. The orders selected reflect certain aspects of the women's personalities or something for which they are looking. The scope of the book is both grand and almost incomprehensible (when imagining the tree) and disturbingly detailed when we look into the individual lives on the island and how the struggle for survival and the need to belong is different from person to person and order to order.
review 2: I picked up this book in the fantasy section of my local bookseller. The title and cover caught my eye, and with nothing further to recommend it to me, I started reading. Ms. Warren has crafted a totally believable world in Botanica, and populated it with folks experiencing real life issues. Her social structure and narrative detail offer fascinating insights into a world that might be. I literally read from cover to cover without stopping. less
