review 1: This sci-fi (fantasy? semi-post-apocalyptic?) book has perhaps the most confident and original world-building of any speculative fiction book I've read in the past few years. Between the focus on a futuristic Islam-derived society rather than your standard American/European/Japanese one, and the genuinely unique (as far as I know) use of "bug tech," it's worth reading for the setting alone. The characters are for the most part interesting and fun to spend time with (despite their frequent psychopathy), and I was impressed by Hurley's inclusion of genuinely brutal and violent women, rather than some sanitized idea of "strong female characters." The plot itself is nothing special, and doesn't go anywhere surprising, and the characterization of Chenja seems surprisingly fla... moret and simplistic in comparison to the book's main setting. But it's a refreshing and entertaining read all around.
review 2: I would give this book 4.5 stars so I decided to be nice and round up. This is a fast paced, well plotted out book, about a broken woman in every sense of the word. It is more then just action and killing and bounty hunting, in the end it examines holiness and what it means. Why a woman would choose a bad mage and not not some one better. It is a story about love, in a very hard and difficult way, and about many other things. It isn't just a fast paced action filled book but something more and something deeper and whats what makes it so much better. less

A little too gritty for my taste, but a fascinating world.
