review 1: I was one of those children whose parents never censored what I read or watched on TV. I must have been around 10 when I saw 'The Bad Seed' on television, the movie starring Patty McCormick. It confirmed suspicions that I already had at such a tender age that some humans from childhood on are 'bad to the bone.' It is not learned behavior nor has to do with environment, the wires are crossed or something like that. I have never changed my opinion in this regard, so I do not find it shocking that children can be evil. That said, I think Confessions is the best story of revenge I've ever read (or watched...I saw the movie a few years ago and it follows the books narrative completely.) It's the perfect revenge in my humble opinion. After I saw the movie and was impressed... more ( especially since most revenge tales center around gangsters, lovers betrayed, etc., in other words, adults seeking revenge upon other adults), I began to tell my boss about the movie. "So...this middle school teacher's 4 year old daughter is murdered by two of her students and.." I got no further as my boss immediately protested, "I couldn't watch something like that." And this is why I prefer Japanese filmmaking and TV to any other country and watch it almost exclusively. Because anything goes. Good, bad or indifferent. There is nothing that is beyond their imagination whether it's in the genre of silly, science fiction, love, horror, fantasy, humor, etc. If you can think it, they can make it. What a wonderful thing that is to be unburdened by political correctness, etc. Anyhow, this is like no other revenge tale I've ever seen or heard. I understand why the teacher sought revenge and do not think what she did was any more distasteful than what her students did. Actually, I'd say she was clever and would not punish her if I were judge and jury.
review 2: Wow, what a book. A book about mothers? About children? About the hunger for notoreity and fame, at whatever cost? About isolation, rejection..? There are so many themes to choose from here, and the narrative of the characters teases them out beautifully. And the ending - brilliant, just brilliant. I just wish I'd read this before seeing the film. The movie is as wonderful at the book (although, as you would expect, the book provides more depth), but robbed me of the shocks - and there are many inside this lean novel, and it perhaps wasn't as good to know they were coming. Still, a great read, and one I'll return to, I'm sure. less

Excellent, teasing narrative structure. Calm, vengeful darkness.
