review 1: I'm quite new to this site and fairly new to these P&P sequels. This was my very first P&P variation and am very happy to say that I found it entertaining. It was very easy to read and the plot, at first glance, seemed very interesting. I loved that it brought me back to my favorite Jane Austen characters. I'm slightly disappointed, however, at a few things. My main criticism lies in the fact that although the first half of the book was definitely reminiscent of P&P and the twist from the original plot brought on new and exciting possibilities, the second half was less than mediocre in more ways than one. In fact, the more I read on, the more I began to feel that the story was lazy and the characters too easy. One particular example, a development that I found rather silly... more, is the conflict with Wickham. It served no purpose whatsoever. It neither deepened the plot nor served as an essential part of the story. Why add it on? How was it solved so easily? Moreover, the more I read on, the more I thought the language and the characters seemed out of place. It didn't contain the wit and the complexity of Jane Austen. Most of the problems within the story were too simple and easily fixed. All in all, I'm sad to say it was a superficial attempt at Jane Austen.Of course, I know that nothing can be like the original. Therefore, I do admit that it was a fairly descent effort.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book. I have read so many Abigail Reynolds books lately, so I thought that I'd branch out to another author who does what ifs. This was well written, and I enjoyed the way she still keeps fairly true to Austen's characters. Reading Reynold's book lately though it was officially odd not having anything racy (lol!). But that's probably how it should be. It was definitely a good read, and I will definitely pick it up again in the future! less
