Detective Lavender Mysteries
review 1: I loved this book! I'm a sucker for Victorian mysteries, and this one fits the bill perfectly. Detective Lavender is dark and mysterious, and oh-so-clever, and his sidekick Woods is - well, everything a sidekick should be. This has a Sherlock Holmes feel to it without really seeming like an imitation. A perfect fall read, with spooky atmosphere, castles, and hints of witchcraft, "Heiress" is also rife with plot twists that kept me guessing throughout the entire read. I was thriled to read at the end that the author based this on actual family events. A huge thumbs up!
review 2: The first two or three chapters read somewhat flat but, after that, I could hardly put the book down. Detective Lavender and Constable Woods are a well-matched pair of Regency-era police
... moremen hired to find a missing heiress who disappeared from a locked room, or did she? There's a lot of menace surrounding her situation, not the least of which involves her own kin. Lavender's a coolly intriguing investigator and Woods balances him off with plenty of canny people skills. The characters are well-fleshed out and the book benefits from Charlton's extensive research into policing as well as the customs of the region. Great for fans of period mysteries! less

A enjoyable mystery novel. I think I like Constable Woods a lot more than Detective Lavender.
