review 1: I wanted to like this; anyone who loves Jane Austen probably reads a lot of Austen fan fiction. I put this away on the first go, then returned to it and kept at it.It passes the Can you keep reading/how will it end test. But it missed for me for a few reasons. First there's something cynical about it. All the pushing of buttons for everyone who's watched Austen based movies too frequently (locks of hair being clipped off!) is too much. as though the author thought that kind of familiarity is comforting even if stale. Then there's history to be learned, but it's dumped out like "look at my research" (and readers who love Austen know A LOT of history) Then there's some shockingly crude language. the book could have been shorter; it really became a slog. And worst of all,the... more heroine's conflicted "romantic" feelings about the two heroes are as thrilling as choosing a flavor of ice cream.Everyone who reads Austen fan fiction will read this anyway (more of the cynicism on my part, if not the authors) But we don't have to like it.
review 2: This is a fun piece of fluff, but don't expect too much. The main character is supposed to be this fascinating woman that stands out from other woman, but nothing that she actually does, other than bumbling around constantly, actually shows this. It's slightly predicable (slightly being a grand understatement) romance and I had the thought when I got close to the end that it was amazing how a book that could entertain you for over 300 pages could actually have so little substance. I rarely have a problem with suspension of disbelief unless it is completely trying to bend real science to work in a fictional way (Dan Brown, anyone?), but I was constantly thinking of little things that got in the way of the story's progression, like the fact that a reality tv show would go so far as to prevent the female contestants from real baths, but allow the men to have all the perks of modern day, and then those men would be not only able to stand them but be attracted to them. Still I enjoyed it better than a lot of contrived romances I have read. It is fairly engaging and the writing flows smoothly. I wouldn't avoid another book by this author if it had an interesting or unique story. less

The heroine from Chicago is involved in a reality dating show set in 1812 England. Rather fun.
