review 1: Okay, wasn’t sure what I was getting into with something like Tarot readings, gambling, mysticism, fans (as in decorative ladies’ fans), and Revolutionary Europe but ended up enjoying the book. Having spent time in Stockholm I really enjoyed the setting and the host of characters introduced throughout the novel. The premise (a group of commoners loyal to the King of Sweden attempt to deflect his assassination—all based on the Tarot readings of a mid-level Swedish customs official) surprisingly intrigued me enough and the pace, although sometimes slow, kept my interest.
review 2: Love and connection are promised to the smug young civil servant Emil Larsson by a fortune-teller and proprietor of a gaming house in 1789 Stockholm. His narcissism and arroganc
... moree lead him to assumptions that he must, through daring adventures, learn to overcome in order to survive in this close world of court intrigue, corruption, and incipient revolution. Life, death, courtship and power flow through the manipulation of silk and vellum fans as Emil makes unexpected friends and venomous enemies while Sweden and it citizens seethe toward political change.(Nancy E., North Branch) less
