review 1: I wanted to like this book, if nothing else for the obviously huge amount of research and planning that went into writing it, but it just never clicked with me. I hated the protagonist. I think he was meant to be sympathetically bumbling? but I found him annoying and clueless, which also may be what was meant. The plot seemed overly contrived. I loved the fan maker and his wife the most. Joanne was intriguing, and I wish the book had been written entirely from her POV, but that would have negated the octavo angle.

... moreolitical events of Stockholm rather than the relationships as Night Circus did. I thought it was interesting but not terrific. But who knew a woman's fan could be so powerful! less

I was intrigued by the cartomancy angle to the book, but it didn't hold my interest.
