review 1: After the Tudor Secret which dealt with Queen Elizabeth in her youth, this one picks up with Gloriana already reigning. This is not about Elizabeth per se, but about Shakespeare and especially his possible first wife, Anne Whateley. Apparently there is a record of a request for a marriage between one William Shaxpere and Anne Whateley, the day before the wedding of William Shagspere and Anne Hathway. So who knows. A very fun read with lots of hypotheses about the origins of sonnets and plays. I wasn't aware of Shakespeare's animosity towards Elizabeth, so that was interesting to read about too.
review 2: Just tedious. I haven't read historical fiction for many years so I don't know if I just don't like it anymore, or if this one was unique. I finished it becaus
... moree it was a book club book. Don't know if I would have finished it otherwise. The 'history' part was thrown in, but not well enough for me to really learn much. I studied Shakespeare quite extensively in college, but don't remember his having a mistress as being part of it. Then again, maybe I wasn't listening. ha! Interesting supposition, with sonnet and play lines thrown in to support it. less
