review 1: This was one of the best young adult books I have read in a long time. It reminded me of how I felt as a teen when I read Judy Blume's books. "Courage for Beginners" almost made me wish I could go back to school and relive 7th grade. This is the kind of book I wish I could write (I also used to dream of writing like Judy Blume). I loved the main character, Mysti, and her friend Rama. I can't really say any more right now. I am still dealing with all the emotions it stirred up in me. This one will stay with me for a while. I may have to re-read it.
review 2: Mysti Mistee Murphy (12, 7th grader, Texas History Growler) & Anibal Gomez (BMF) go to Beatty MS. Mysti familyconsists of Mama (agoraphobia) Dad & Laura (sister). They live at 4520 Fargo Drive. The 2
... more girls Mysti & Anibal are to design a Texas Revolution project. Rama Khan (Muslim neighbor) & Mysti are now BFF. If things couldn’t get worse Dad has a bizarre car accident & ends up in the hospital. Dr. Randolph said it will be a slow recovery.Mysti now must take care of the family. Anibal parts ways with Mysti & joins the hipster group (social experiment). . . What a delight Hot air balloons. Had those once here where I live. Mysti longs to go to Paris France someday. Anibal doesn't contribute much. The history project is supposed to be a PP presentation & a replica of the Alamo, but it turn out its more like the Louvre museum. Ms. Overstreet (history teacher) gives the 2 a big fat 0 for a grade. Mysti is playing both sides & talks with the teacher. Will Dad recover & come home? Will mom ever leave the house again?I love the stereotypes or nicknames: girl who…woman who goes somewhere. We used jocks, preppys (popular, included cheerleaders), Hippie (Stoner, druggie), nerd (geek, brainiac, debate team, band), & lots/lots of racial slurs deluxe that U would defiantly get kicked out of school for nowadays. A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well MS age/above written book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make great kid movie, animated cartoon, or mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars. Sweet story. Good use of a diverse cast of characters without being too overt.
