review 1: Well, I haven't been this disappointed in a book in a long time. The plot premise was so promising, but it never really panned out. The characters were quite flat, and there seemed little character development past the first few chapters. The use of magic was a good idea, but that never really became believable in the story, either. What could have been a unique supernatural murder mystery was really just a boring book, which frankly I shouldn't have spent my time reading. Sorry to those who loved this book, but instead of leaving me hungry for more, it just left me starving for a good book.
review 2: The Shattering is a character driven story that reads like a faster-paced contemporary, but has this tiny paranormal twist to it. The twist works splendidly ... morethough because it keeps the story rooted in reality, while making things just a little more complicated for them. Karen Healey presents the reader with a small summer warm town where there are sucides. Only Janna, Sione, and Keri don’t believe they’re suicides. Keri is confidence athlete, a rugby player, while Sione is too quiet. Janna is all about heavy rock and isn't afraid to go to the extreme measurements to find the killer. And as mysteries are uncovered the book gets more and more shocking witha twist at the end that you won't believe. The detailed setting and characters will make you jump, scream, and on the edge of your seat. less
