When We Wake
review 1: I have to admit there were three reasons why this book caught my eye. Number one was the author's name being the same as my own, secondly the cover and thirdly the setting. I really enjoyed reading a book set in the future in my own country. As bleak as it sounds climate and politics wise it was refreshing to be able to read of a future which wasn't dystopian in nature. It was much more political and much of it believable, both technological advancements and policy. The one area I had to really suspend belief was the way in which the main character was revived successfully after being cryogenically frozen for about a hundred years. Maybe I'm being overly cynical of the possibility of it happening but naturally if it hadn't been possible in this book world there wou... moreldn't have been a story to begin with. Overall I found it an enjoyable read.
review 2: I got sick of future dystopias for a while, but I will read anything by Karen Healey, and this was great. Not so much a wacky dystopia as an inevitable future if things keep going the way they have been (i.e., rising sea levels, polar ice melting, ozone layer depletion). And the secret government evil, although tinged with the future, has a pretty firm basis in the evils of the past. Excellent, fast-paced stuff with great characters. less
