review 1: Beautiful, tragic, saddening, uplifting, and expressed through relatively believable characters. Micah still turned from his conditioning too quickly to be realistic in the effects of long-term abuse, but it was a novella after all, still beautifully done, and the emotions nonetheless felt real. I love the transitions from part to part, how Micah grew into and accepted himself. The more I think on it, I actually wouldn't change anything about this novella, which is extremely rare for me to say.The abuse described in the beginning wasn't too explicit or horrifying, rather saddening, and set up his emotional state for the rest of the book. So if you're worrying about that, there's no need.I'm not sure if I'm going to read the expanded version, because here it was short, s... moreo not too repetitive or pensive, but if it was stretched out (like it is in the sequel), I don't know if it would have the same effect on me. I feel like it's nicely closed with the epilogue anyway, so I don't really feel I need more. I have read reviews of the sequel that share my sentiment, so I probably won't...but this one, I definitely recommend. Especially if you like a plot of mild abuse and non-con with later healing and care. This one definitely broke through the book slump I'd been in for the past few days :)
review 2: Spoils of War tells us how Micah, a young Alekian prince is rescued from his imprisonment in the Herran court by Eli, a former warrior who has accepted becoming Micah’s slave to be able to steal him from the court without bringing about any reprisals upon his people. Micah, who grew considering himself the humblest slave in the Herran court, has many issues to assume his new role as master of the powerful man who he has learnt to love. Learning to assume his lover’s status involves assuming and understanding his own status as an Alekian prince.A beautifully written novella, the story of Micah and Eli is sweet but it feels a bit rushed; I would have liked more story building and tension. The characters are likeable but I find them lacking at the psychological aspect. I am sure they have potential if given the appropriate development. There is a second book in this story. I will undoubtedly read it, if only to find out how these promising characters develop. less

Wall to wall sex scenes with some story thrown in. Not surprisingly, I was okay with that.
