review 1: I enjoyed this but did prefer the first volume, which was discomfiting in a different way. Here I feel I have some clandestine, happenstance background knowledge that he will become frustrated and may break up with Linda in time -- the wandering eye to come --, even as I am reading about their love and tribulations. I guess many of our struggles are based around aging parents (first volume), love and children/family, and of course the great bogeymen of time and memory. Not to mention that dastardly neighbor woman?! -- who keeps cropping up. He does enjoy the company of friends though. I can't help but think Linda's side of things might be very different! But the ruminations and reflections on life make for interesting, slow reading. Clearly many readers identify with... more these. I enjoyed the drama around the mother in law as well, and the teary eyed speech for his own mother's 60th. Of course the "love of your life" evolving/devolving into dailiness with some bickering rings true.
review 2: OK. Book One was bifurcated between a quotidian boyhood story and a powerful, harrowing account of the aftermath of Knausgaard's father's death. There were such highs to balance the litanies and catalogs.The first 370 pages of Book Two are Knausgaard's version of "How I Met Your Mother". Some powerful meditations on the nature of memory and the role of one in one's own life strengthen the book's second half, but - more so than Book One - this could have been trimmed by 200 pages.Still - he stuck the landing. So, grudging recommendation, but I'm going to take a long break from Karl Ove time before Book Three. less
