review 1: I don't know what it is about Knausgaard that keeps me reading through page after page of very "normal", ordinary stuff, but he does it and I love it. This third book was supposed to be less intense than the previous two, but I enjoyed it equally, if not more than the others. Perhaps because I found myself reminiscing about my own childhood, and sympathizing with little Karl Ove more than I did with grown-up Knausgaard. In any case, another keeper that makes me look forward to reading the next in the series.
review 2: Since I finished book three a few days ago I've felt a certain emptiness where that seemingly endless narrative used to be. I've tried to start something new a few times, but everything I've picked up seems shallow and affected by comparison--espe
... morecially affected, mannered, trying too hard to impress. Knausgaard himself writes about losing his interest in reading, both fiction and nonfiction. He'd start a novel and think: somebody made this up. Start a short story: somebody made this up. Start what he called a documentary (and which I assume means narrative nonfiction), and again: somebody made this up. It sounds facile and naive, ridiculous even, this complaint that somebody made it up (of course somebody made it up!) but the first three My Struggle books explain precisely where he's coming from. I don't know. I'm painting with a broad brush here. There's good stuff out there, great stuff, but right now I've been rattled a little by what Knausgaard's managed to do, and it doesn't feel like I can just pick up another good book and read on like nothing happened. I still haven't gotten my head around what, precisely, he did do. The writing is so simple, even awkward, and the story so tedious in its individual scenes, but so shocking and profound in the aggregate. Anyone else feel like this? Also, any suggestions for a good post My Struggle read? The English translation of book four won't be out until summer 2015. Alas. less
