review 1: I did enjoy "Boyhood Island" but not the same way I loved "A Man in Love".In many ways it was a good reminder of what growing up in small town/rural area pre-internet was like, very much like my own childhood lots of unsupervised playing outside, the imamgination was the limit and reading. The boy stuff, well, I couldn't quite identify with that but it was good for a laugh.I was struck by the amount he feared and hated his father. This came up in volume 1, but the extent of it becomes abundantly clear here. It's hard to imagine a child as young as 6 or 7 wishing them self dead to punish a parent, but clearly that's the impact long-term psychological abuse can have. This volume was much more of what happened, with less of the stunning literary analysis I've started to crave.... moreI'm looking forward to volume 4, in translation, still not brave enough to attempt in Norwegian or Danish
review 2: Definitely more linear and suffers for the lack of temporal latitude/reflection--in fact, I would probably not have read this book if not for the other two. It especially resonates with #1/A Death in the Family; if one wants to see more of the father and his relationship to Karl Ove, this one does it.It also contains a huge amount of pathetic behavior by the young Karl Ove! Lots of pining, seeking for pornography, crying, poor soccer playing, failed social manipulations, etc. Which is also a pleasure. And again part of the strange pull of these books is that they cause a reader (this reader) to swing back and forth from exasperation and near-boredom to real inspiring moments. And the balance of the former to the latter can be extreme! And oh God so much shitting!Still, I've caught up with the translators, so there...“Crying so easily was a big problem. I cried every time anyone told me off or corrected me, or when I thought they would. Usually it was Dad. He only had to raise his voice to make me cry, even though I knew he hated me doing it.” less
