review 1: Boyhood. Blue Is The Warmest Color. Satantango. These types of stories that lag on for hours while seemingly telling vital stories of miniature details. Brilliance that exists by having an editor apply a light if not invisible touch. So here's the book I'm told to have an opinion on and be skeptical of. The book more people have opined on then read. I think I can say I loved it. The writing is limpid and balances like a grievously extended tape measure, always threatening to collapse into something just as boring and pedantic as all the descriptors of the book would make it sound. But it works. Memory like a motherfucker, earnestness like a beast. Would we could all turn on such a skill at times of our lives. On to book 2.

Knausgaard's six volume novel at times dips too far into the banal in its attempt to draw more from life than banality, but ultimately is a fascinatingly successful mix of hyper-detailed accounts and ruminations emanating impossibly from both directly in each moment and from a writerly distance. Already in this one volume we see revolving revelations that add more and more as we receive the same details multiple times. It will be a treasure to be a part of this enormous, unfolding story as image English releases arrive over the next few years.

If you like naturalism and the elevation of the banal, this is for you...not so much for me.

Brilliant and introspective, sentimental
