review 1: While this was not a book I'd want to read again and again, it was gripping. So gripping in fact, that I gave myself a stomach ache worrying over the welfare of the characters! This was a unique premise that I enjoyed reading, but in my opinion, because of the subterfuge, it was a less romantic romance. I had some issues with the characters sneaking around to be together when they were supposed to be upstanding, caring people. I get that romantic feelings can be strong, but to cause them to betray so many people and damned the consequences did not elicit much sympathy from me.The duke, our sometimes hero, must marry for money because his father lost it all when his mind was weak. Our weak willed heroine offers him an illegal way to get the money back when he can't thro... moreugh legal means and he jumps on it. Even though the hero is betrothed to our heroine's cousin, they continue to sneak around together and our hero even offers to make the heroine his mistress because he has too much honor/duty to marry her! How tragic and romantic (for those who can't tell, this is sarcasm). You as the reader are supposed to be comforted that what the hero and heroine are doing isn't wrong because we get views of the cousin and she is doing some sneaking around of her own. For a group of people of noble birth, especially two I unwedded women, their behavior seemed very modern to me.I know I'm ranting a bit so I want to say some good things. Martin is a great storyteller. The plot line is inventive and you do get a happy ending. I liked many of the secondary characters. I read this book very quickly and it was hard to put down. But the main characters are not true to the time period and are slaves to their own lust. Therefore, if you like a well paced, unique story and are okay with the characters having some moral flaws, this book is for you. I actually didn't realize how much the characters bothered me until after I finished the book. I will still read the next one in the series too because the secondary characters were so vivid. I am also hopeful that they won't sneak/sleep around, but we shall see. I'm willing to take the chance. 3.5 stars.
review 2: I loved the heroine in this book.. She dreams of owning her own hat shop and is a companion. I love when my heroines are on the poor side instead of perfect, titled and beautiful. So the book was good in that way and the premise is really quite good. I love a good Film-Flam except for some reason this one just seemed boring. It never hooked me as they usually do. I will probably try to read the others in this series but I'm not going out of my way for them. 3.5 stars but just couldn't bring myself to give it a 4. less
