review 1: Reggie is an orphaned 16 year old who has dropped out of school and making it on her own. She is being tutored by one of her former teachers who is suffering from a brain tumor.Dr. Joanna Hunter is the mother of a little boy who Reggie babysits for and also the sole survivor when her family was brutally murdered when she was a little girl.Jackson Brodie is a former policeman and private eye now living on millions left to him by a former client. He's determined to find out if the little boy his former girlfriend birthed is his. On his way home he takes the wrong train and winds up in a horrible train wreck.All their lives are intertwined and the stories are told in bits and pieces in first character. I didn't feel some of the pieces at the end all fit together as neatly as ... morethey author tried to make them.
review 2: I really enjoyed this, my second Jackson Brodie book. True, as a result of Atkinson's style of frequent digression, it took the first third of the book to figure out which were major characters and which were merely incidentals on side-trips. But the three main characters -- Brodie (ex-cop), Louise (cop), and Reggie (teen girl detective/"warrior virgin") are terrific, very engaging and believable. There are a lot of coincidences in the plot, but that didn't bother me. A couple quotes I liked:"You know there are no rules ...[for]... the way we live our lives. There's no one watching us to see if we're doing it properly, there is no properly, we just make it up as we go along." "Life's random. The best you can do is pick up the pieces."I plan to read more in this series soon. less
